Stone identified by Ruth Siddall.
These stones are difficult to identify out of situ and by the naked eye alone. They could have been derived from Carboniferous intrusions in northern England and/or Scotland's Midland Valley or alternatively from the Tertiary Cleveland Dyke.

The Griffin is something of a geological gem, with stones from many sources, including various types of limestone, sandstone as well as reused cobbles and kerbs. However, very little appears to be recorded about the architecture and construction of this building.
