Cookie Policy

Last updated: 22 August 2026

This page lists every cookie this site sets, what it is for, and how long it lasts. If you only want the short version: we set one cookie to remember your choice, WordPress sets a few if you log in as an administrator, and Google Analytics only runs if you say yes.

Your choice

When you first arrive you are asked whether you agree to analytics cookies. Nothing non-essential is set until you answer, and refusing is a single click. You can change your mind whenever you like using the Cookie settings link at the bottom of any page.

If you refuse, no analytics cookies are set and Google Analytics is not loaded at all — not loaded and blocked, but never sent to your browser in the first place.

Essential cookies

These are needed for the site to work and do not require consent.

Cookie Set by Purpose Expires
cc_cookie_accept This site Remembers whether you accepted or refused analytics cookies, so you are not asked again 1 year
wordpress_test_cookie WordPress Checks whether your browser accepts cookies at all Session
wordpress_logged_in_*, wp-settings-* WordPress Only set if you log in to administer the site. Ordinary visitors never receive these Session to 1 year

Analytics cookies — only if you agree

Cookie Set by Purpose Expires
_ga Google Analytics Distinguishes one visitor from another so visit counts are not double-counted 2 years
_ga_VEYLQV9TPN Google Analytics Keeps track of the current visit for this specific site 2 years

We use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages people find useful — for example, that the map is used far more than the news page. It tells us nothing that identifies you personally.

Cookies set by other companies

Two parts of the site load services run by Google, which may set their own cookies.

Service Where Why
Google reCAPTCHA (_GRECAPTCHA) Every page. The invisible version that scores traffic loads site-wide; the submission form also shows a tick-box version Tells a person from an automated script. Without it the forms fill with spam, so we treat it as necessary for the forms to function and it is not covered by the analytics choice
Google Maps The map, and pages showing an individual location Displays the map. Loading it sends your IP address to Google and Google may set cookies on its own domains

We are being straightforward about reCAPTCHA rather than burying it: it is a Google service, it is not strictly speaking an analytics cookie, and it loads on every page of the site, not only the pages with forms, whatever you choose. If that matters to you, you can still contact us by email instead.

How to remove cookies

Use the Cookie settings link at the foot of any page to change your choice on this site. To clear cookies more broadly, every browser has a setting for it — search its help for “clear cookies”. Blocking all cookies will not stop you reading the site.

We would like to use Google Analytics to see which pages people find useful. It sets cookies in your browser, so we only do it if you say yes. Nothing about you is identified individually. What we use and why.
